1955 Housewife....was it really this way, or did some wishful thinking guy write this?

I can assure you that if my husband came home and found a clean house, his wife wearing make up, and well behaved children, he would walk out and try to find the correct house.

We live in different times, don't we? I think people actually use to think that way. Just a guess.

Too bad we don't have the retraction and editorial comments from the issue following this article ;)

If my hubby stayed out all night there would be more than just questions! Some aspects still apply I think. How much more enjoyable for everyone in the family if our homes were a haven and place of peace.

hahaha--love it!

And I'm sure that "...be a little gay and a little more interesting for him" is what every good, meat-eating, hard-working husband desires.

Remember the movie "Stepford Wives"? I think this is an attempt to do something similar!

Stay our all night with no questions asked? The only way this would happen would be if she left him or just beat him to a pulp the moment he came through the door!

Lisa, I'll see you and raise you:

""...be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. Most men are hungry at when they come home and the prospect of you making out with your neighbor (especially his favorite leggy blonde, Bonnie) is part of the warm welcome needed."

As horribly... horrible as this seems, I've got to admit that I for one, would love coming home from work at the end of the day if someone did all of these things for me!! Sign this girl up for a 1950's housewife please!!

Forgive me while I am still barfing!!! To think that it could possibly have been "that way" not too long ago. Amazing. Definately written by a man. And the "being gay" part...um...yes...has definately taken on an entirey different meaning in this day and age!!

How did you get my MIL's handbook??? YES..she WAS the perfect 1955 wife and YES my husband was the little boy in the picture (except you need to insert two male siblings in place of the girl). I have been married for 27 years and have spent most of that time trying to convince my husband that if fact IT IS NOT 1955 ANYMORE! (I could write pages and pages of advice that my MIL gave me when we first got married and most of it hinged around ideas like the one in this article-wow).

My how times have changed. Remember June Cleever on Leave It To Beaver, wearing heels and pearls and an apron while doing her "housework'? We laughed about that even when that show was on in the 60's. But, alot of women in that era DID wear dresses all the time, Mama included. It was a shock the first time I saw her, after I was married, in slacks!
